Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the effectiveness of occlusion therapy in the patients whose amblyopia realized after the age of 7 years and who treated with only glasses before this age.

METHODS

The files of 25 patients between 7-12 years and 17 patients between 13-17 years were retrospectively evaluated. The patients who were between 7-12 years were accepted as group 1, and who were between 13-17 years were accepted as group 2. Improvement of two lines or more was agreed to be succesful. Two grops were compared with regard to success rates. The effect of severity of amblyopia, the cause of anisometropic amblyopia and the prior usage of glasses on treatment success were elucidated.

RESULTS

Success rate was 76% in group 1, and 41% in group 2. Although in both groups there was no statistically significance, the success rate in patients with severe amblyopia was better when compared with patients with moderate amblyopia. The success rate was better in patients with hypermetropia when compared with patients with astigmatisma in both groups. The success rate was better in patients who were not priorly weared glasses.

CONCLUSION

Optic correction and occlusion therapy are effective in patients with age of 7 to 17 years who had no previous occlusion treatment.
