An Investigation of depression and desparation levels in parents of subakut sklerozan panensefalit (SSPE ) patients Çimen Altay1, Duygu Arıkan2 1Dicle University Medical School Hospital, Gastroenterology Clinic 2Department Of Child Health Nursing, Health Sciences Of Faculty, Atatürk University, OBJECTIVE: Aims of this study are detecting sociodemographics of parents of SSPE patients, determining of parents' depression and level of desparation, and detecting the relation between depression and levels of desparation METHODS: This study was conducted with the parents of SSPE patients who are registered to Diyarbakır branch of SSPE Foundation. The investigation was carried out between December 2014 and January 2015. Data was gathered by Sociodemographic data form, Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Hopelessness Scale. The data was evaluated with percentage, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis, t test, mean, correlation analyses and alpha coefficient. RESULTS: A significant difference wasn't detected between number of children, age, level of education, place, average income and depression and hopelessness levels of parents of children with SSPE. CONCLUSION: It was detected that level of depression was moderate and level of hopelessness was mild. A significant relation is positively detected between depression and level of hopelessness (p<0.01). It was suggested that to educate the parents of SSPE patients in early period and giving personal consulting service and it was suggested that the universalization of the treatment institutes for SSPE will be important. YÖNTEMLER: Araştırma, Diyarbakır İlinde SSPE Derneği Diyarbakır şubesine kayıtlı SSPE hastalarının ebeveynleri (73 kişi) ile yürütülmüştür. Araştırma Aralık 2014 ve Ocak 2015 tarihleri arasında gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veriler Sosyo-demografik Veri Formu, Beck Depresyon Ölçeği, Beck Umutsuzluk Ölçeği ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde yüzdelik dağılım, ortalama, standart sapma, korelasyon, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney U t testi ve Alpha katsayı hesaplaması kullanılmıştır. BULGULAR: SSPE’li çocuğa sahip ebeveynlerin depresyon ve umutsuzluk düzeyleri ile yaş, eğitim, gelir düzeyi, yaşadığı yer, çocuk sayısı değişkenlerine göre anlamlı farklılıklar tespit edilmemiştir. SONUÇ: Ebeveynlerin depresyon düzeyleri orta düzeyde, umutsuzluk düzeyleri hafif düzeyde olduğu saptanmıştır. Depresyon, umutsuzluk düzeyleri arasında pozitif yönde anlamlı ilişki olduğu bulunmuştur(p<0.01). SSPE’li çocukların tedavilerinin yapılabileceği kurumların yaygınlaştırılması ve erken dönemlerde anne-babalara, aile eğitimi, bireysel danışmanlık hizmetlerinin verilmesi önerilmiştir.
