Assessment of the family function perception and social support levels of mothers of children with down syndrome Zila Özlem Kırbaş1, Hava Özkan2 1Regional Training And Research Hospital, Erzurum, Turkey 2Ataturk University, Faculty Of Health Sciences, Erzurum, Turkey OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the family function perception and social support levels of mothers of children with Down syndrome. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted in seven private education and rehabilitation centers affiliated to three District National Education Directorates in city center between 15 March 2012 and 28 February 2013. The study was conducted with mothers of 63 children with Down syndrome, who accepted to participate in the study, without using the method of sample group selection. The data were collected using the Questionnaire, FES, and MSPSS. Percentage, mean, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test and Correlation analysis were used to assess the data. RESULTS: Evaluating the relation between the perception of family functions and the perceived social support; it was determined that regarding family function perception of mothers, there was an inverse and significant relation between their scores of subscales “Problem Solving”, “Communication”, “Roles”, “General Functions” and their total score and between their scores of social support dimensions “Perceived from Family, Friend and a Significant Other” and their total social support score and there were inverse and significant relations between scores of the “Affective Involvement” and “Behavioral Control” subscales of the perception of family functions and scores of the social support dimension of “perceived from the family, a significant other” and total score. CONCLUSION: The results revealed that while mothers of children with Down syndrome fulfill the family functions, mothers having higher levels of social support carry out the family functions more effectively. YÖNTEMLER: Araştırma; il merkezindeki üç İlçe Mili Eğitim Müdürlüğüne bağlı, yedi özel eğitim ve rehabilitasyon merkezinde 15 Mart 2012-28 Şubat 2013 tarihleri arasında tanımlayıcı olarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Evrenden örneklem seçme yöntemine gidilmeden, araştırmaya katılmayı kabul eden 63 Down sendromlu çocukların anneleri ile yürütülmüştür. Veriler; Soru Formu, ADÖ ve ÇYASDÖ ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde; Yüzdelik, ortalama, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U testleri ve Korelasyon analizi kullanılmıştır. BULGULAR: Aile işlevlerini algılama ile algılanan sosyal destek arasındaki ilişki değerlendirildiğinde; annelerin, aile işlevlerini algılamada “Problem Çözme”, “İletişim”, “Roller”, “Genel İşlevler” alt boyutları ve Toplam Puanı ile “Aileden, Arkadaştan ve Özel İnsandan Algılanan” sosyal destek boyutları ile toplam puan arasında ters yönde anlamlı ilişki olduğu, aile işlevlerini algılamanın “Duygusal Tepki Verebilme” ve “Davranış Kontrolü” ile aileden, özel insandan algılanan sosyal destek boyutları ve toplam puan arasında ters yönde anlamlı ilişkilerin bulunduğu saptanmıştır. SONUÇ: Bulgular, Down sendromlu çocukların annelerinin aile işlevlerini yerine getirebildiklerini, sosyal desteği yüksek olan annelerin ise, aile işlevlerini daha etkili bir şekilde gerçekleştirdiklerini göstermiştir.
