Evaluation of the quality of sleep in patients diagnosed with epilepsy and their mothers Erhan Bayram, Yasemin Topcu, Pakize Karaoğlu, Uluç Yiş, Semra Hız Kurul Dokuz Eylul University Hospital, Department Of Pediatrics, Division Of Pediatric Neurology, Izmir OBJECTIVE: To detect the sleep disorders and comorbid conditions in patients with epilepsy and their mothers. METHODS: Seventy patients diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy and their mothers were included in the study. Pittsburg Sleep Qualty Index were performed to the patients and their mothers. Seventy patients diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy were included in the study. The study was approved by local ethics committee of Dokuz Eylul University. RESULTS: Among the patients 31 (44.3 %) were female and 39 (55.7 %) were male. The mean age was 11.39±2.76 years. Sleep disorders were more prevalent in children with frequent seizures. There were no significant relationship between type of epileptic seizures, electroencephalographic abnormalities and sleep disturbance. The prevalence of sleep disorders were increased in mothers who have children with increased sleep quality scores. CONCLUSION: Patients with frequent epileptic seizures and also their mothers should be evaluated for sleep disorders. YÖNTEMLER: Çalışmaya idiopatik epilepsi tanısıyla izlenen yetmiş olgu ve anneleri dahil edildi. Çalışmaya dahil edilen olgular ve annelerine Pittsburg Uyku Kalite İndeksi uygulandı. Çalışma öncesi Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi etik kurulundan onay alındı. BULGULAR: Olguların 31’i (%44.3) kız, 39’u (%55.7) erkek idi. Yaş ortalaması 11.39±2.76 yıl olarak belirlendi. Sık nöbet geçiren çocuklarda uyku bozukluğunun daha sık görüldüğü saptandı. Epileptik nöbet tipi ve elektroensefalografi anormalliği ile uyku bozukluğu arasında anlamlı bir ilişki saptanmadı. Çocuklarında uyku kalite skoru yükseldikçe annelerinde de uyku bozukluğu görülme sıklığının arttığı belirlendi. SONUÇ: Sık epileptik nöbet geçiren hastalar ve anneleri uyku bozuklukları açısından da değerlendirilmelidir.
