Investigation of viral agents by multiplex PCR in children with symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection Talat Ecemiş1, Özge Yılmaz2, Tamer Şanlıdağ1, Sinem Akçalı1, Hasan Yüksel2 1Department Of Medical Microbiology, Celal Bayar University, Manisa, Turkey 2Department Of Pediatrics, Celal Bayar University, Manisa, Turkey OBJECTIVE: We evaluate the results of “respiratory viral panel” tested in children with symptoms of acute upper respiratory tract infections. METHODS: Multiplex PCR test results of nasopharyngeal swap samples of 160 symptomatic children were analyzed. RESULTS: Fifty-five patients (34.4%) had PCR test positivity. Two (n=5 patients; 3.1%), and three (n=1; 0.6%) viral species were detected. Rhinovirus was the most frequently detected species (n= 14; 25.4%). CONCLUSION: It was concluded that multiplex PCR is a reliable test which can simultaneously detect numerous viruses in a short time in accordance with the results of this study. Manisa AMAÇ: Bu çalışmada, akut üst solunum yolu semptomlu çocuklarda test edilmiş “viral solunum paneli” sonuçlarını değerlendirdik. YÖNTEMLER: Toplam 160 semptomlu çocuğun nazofaringeal sürüntü örneklerinin multipleks PCR ile test edilmiş sonuçları incelendi. BULGULAR: Hastaların 55 (%34.4)’i pozitifti. Beş hastada (%3.1) çift etken, bir hastada (%0.6) ise üç etken bulundu. En sık olarak insan rinovirüs 14 hastada (%25.4) tespit edildi. SONUÇ: Etken viruslarının sıklığının ortaya konulduğu çalışmada, çok sayıda virusu aynı anda ve kısa sürede tespit edebilen multipleks PCR’ın güvenilir bir test olduğu sonucuna varıldı.
